Description

A psychological thriller that pits a community against a man, and that man against himself.Joseph Lee lost his wife, the love of his life. She was slain in their home, right under his nose. As if the grief weren’t enough, Lee was also blamed for her murder. At the end of the day, the detectives didn’t have any proof that Lee was the murderer, but that didn’t stop the community from shunning him or his friends and family from cutting him out of their lives. They didn’t need proof, they said.Left to stew in his own self-loathing, a miserable existence of solitude and narcotics, Lee is alone with his regrets and his remorse. But his life is about to change—there is hope yet for this hopeless man. A beautiful woman who looks uncannily like his deceased wife moves into the vacant house across the road, sparking something in Joseph Lee that he thought was long dead. But after the light at the end of the tunnel, there is even more darkness for Lee. This beautiful lookalike, and the house she now calls home, are hiding terrible secrets that will unravel everything Lee thought he knew about himself, his neighbors, and his deceased wife.

A grand psychological mystery. I could feel encroaching shadows as I read this one. Absolutely a marvelous thriller - not to be missed if you like a dark and brooding quality to your mysteries...Joseph Lee lives a hermit's existence, hiding from the world, not leaving his house, drinking, thinking dark thoughts that also haunt his dreams. He is in the clutches of deep depression over the murder of his wife, Jennifer, although he was never charged with the crime. His grief is complicated by general public opinion; overwhelmingly, people consider him a murderer who profited from his crime, since Jennifer left him a wealthy man. His former friends and family abandon him, and Joseph leads a lonely and miserable existence. Then one day, a new couple, the Lechnens, move into House 23 on his street. Zala and Riso Lechnen knock at Joseph's door and introduce themselves as his new neighbors. To his stunned eyes, Zala bears an uncanny resemblance to his murdered wife. Because of this, he allows himself out of his house to socialize with the couple. Joseph enjoys their first get-together, and other cordial times follow. Joseph realizes he is very fond of the Lechnens, and he is uplifted by their friendship. As their personal ties thicken, the plot moves ahead at a perfect pace to introduce a subtlely ominous feeling; there is the shadow of threat, and we (readers) somehow know that Joseph is at risk.Joseph himself has a heightened sense of paranoia as a result of the snubs, whispers and innuendo from people who see him as a murderer. But his ties with the new neighbors have uplifted his spirits; he seems to be enjoying life now, bad dreams have disappeared, and he's gladdened by their compamy. Then truths begin to be uncovered ... (I won't say more - I don't want any spoilers to slip into this review.)If I had to give one critical comment about the book, it would probably be about the confrontational scenes (Patrick et al) which go on FAR too long and are packed with unending physical assaults, violence and wild mayhem. With the fine and subtle chapters that precede it, I didn't expect to be tossed into a ring of Rock-em Sock-em robots.Still, this book was quite a unique and complex study, a different kind of thriller, and one which I enjoyed and would recommend.
