Description

“If Harry Potter had grown up and gone to the university in Lev Grossman’s Magician’s Trilogy, the result might look something like this.” –James Rollins, #1 New York Times bestseller of The Last OdysseyDreden Sharpstand and his father are poor. All the humans and avehos of Kroonsaed are hardly getting by. If not for the bright, enigmatic sea of gas called the Sunitian Sea, life and resources in the town would be prosperous. But the Sea has secrets of its own...One night Dreden and his friends are attacked by mysterious men, with weapons they cannot understand. When they strike a second time, they chase the men into the Sea, and are transported to an alternate world, to a city called Brunswald, where technology exists centuries ahead of their time. Since the new world is only populated by humans, Dreden's friend Gerrika the aveho, a flightless, humanoid bird, becomes an instant celebrity. When Dreden meets Morell Edland, the son of the richest family in the country, he falls in love with him, and can hardly remember why he ended up in the new world in the first place. Slowly, things start to reveal themselves. A secret, lost history between their two worlds is becoming unraveled, and a seemingly omnipotent force is killing thousands across the world. Just one thing is for sure: Dreden and his friends didn't end up in Brunswald by accident. From the author of the Kirkus-acclaimed Immortale, The Century's Scribe is a must read for devourers of new adult fiction and high fantasy. Brendan Walsh delivers on his most personal novel yet.

On top of being a great entertaining story, The Century's Scribe is a next generation fantasy book because of the depth it brings to the reader in terms of psychological and sociological norms of our world that are paralleled through fantasy imagery and world building, which really makes us question how we see reality. The author does a phenomenal job of creating two parallel universes, both that are parallel to our world. This allows readers to more easily examine their own realities in a different way. To me, that is one of the main things that great art does.Stuck in the mundaneness of their lives back home in Kroonsaed, Dreden and his friends long for deeper connections in their lives. When they are mysteriously transported to another world, they find themselves at a crossroads in their lives. Back home they felt they were just normal people, nobody important. But in this new land, their talents that were underappreciated back home, suddenly seem to be elevating them upwards in this land. Little do they know they have stumbled upon a cataclysmic time and their future may not be what it seems...The Century's Scribe is a must read if you enjoy fantasy that wonderfully blurs the lines of magic realism. In a world not so different than the one you and I live in, yet at the same time very different with all the cool things you imagined as a kid, including a scholarly, talking dragon! The variety of characters and their perspectives create a rich world where the reader will become lost in the pages, and afterwards, feel as if these characters are people they know.Preordering book 2 as soon as I can.
