Samuel Ackerman seemingly has it all. He’s tall, handsome, intelligent, superbly fit and motivated. He wants to be a Navy SEAL. But there’s a hidden problem. Samuel has severe neurological damage as a result of repeated physical abuse from his father. Not to mention the accompanying psychological damage.SEAL training starts off with Hell Week when the instructors try their hardest to break the recruits. Samuel Ackerman washes out from the course. He believes that chief instructor Nevens hounded him unfairly and wants his revenge. And he gets it.With Nevens out of the way, Samuel sets his sights on taking the SEAL course again. This time he’s sure he’ll pass. But one obstacle after another keeps coming up and each time, his fierce motivation results in him adopting the only solution he knows: drastic action.Samuel gets sent to Lake Orion, Michigan as a Navy recruiter. He needs to achieve quota to obtain the good service record that will allow him entry to the SEAL course. But there’s an eighteen year old girl standing in his way.Beth Fischer is the star of the high school basketball team. She’s hoping for the basketball scholarship that will allow her to escape Lake Orion and her alcoholic mother. Then a severe injury on court dashes her hopes. Her late father was in the Navy. Beth sees another chance at college and escape: join the Navy. She could be the answer to Samuel’s prayers. And by the way, she’s as lovely as he is handsome. Now there’s sexual tension complicating both their ambitions as well.A masterful plot, a time-bomb ending, two well-drawn characters, human interest, what else could you possibly want from a thriller? Dan Ames writes in a terse, economical style that’s almost brutal in its efficiency, creating a gritty reality that convinces utterly.I thought hard about something to niggle about and landed on the title, which I thought not strong enough to sell a lot of books. This book needs to be made into a movie starring the best talents available.
