Description

Murder and mystery reach epidemic proportions when a devastating plague sweeps the country in this “harrowing medical horror story” (The New York Times) from the #1 bestselling author of Coma“The ultimate nightmare . . . spine-tingling intrigue and fever-pitched action.”—Associated Press When the director of a Los Angeles health maintenance clinic succumbs, along with seven patients, to an untreatable—and virulently contagious—virus, Dr. Melissa Blumenthal is assigned by the Centers for Disease Control to investigate. The California case is merely the first in a burgeoning series of outbreaks that occur in unrelated geographical areas but with puzzling commonalities: The locations are always healthcare facilities, and their victims are only physicians and their patients. As her investigation takes increasingly bizarre turns, Melissa finds that behind the natural threat lurks a far more sinister possibility—sabotage—and soon finds herself facing the wrath of a powerful cabal, sworn to achieve its aims, no matter what the cost in human life—including Melissa’s.

Robin Cook used to be a doctor, much as John Grisham used to be a lawyer. While Mr. Grisham writes legal thrillers; Dr. Cook instead gets wrapped up in medical mysteries. Who better to spin a yarn that pulls you in from the first moment to zip through a novel that are masterful in the details of their once-primary jobs. But this review is strictly regarding Robin Cook’s “Outbreak”. I enjoy a lot of books, and usually read several at a time, juming between them. However, “Outbreak” was so enthralling, so incredibly fast-paced and exciting, I couldn’t put it down. AndI couldn’t even consider reading another book whilst reading this particular novel. I don’t doubt that immediately after writing this review, I will select another one of Dr. Cook’s novels, to read feverishly over the next fews days. And I have no doubt I’ll thoroughly enjoy it.This particular novel introduces us to Doctor Marissa Blumenthal, previously a pediatrician, who has recently changed careers and is now working at the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, GA, where as an Epidemiologist Investigative Officer, she is sent to Los Angeles, CA, to look into an outbreak of a previously unknown virus that hits with blinding speed, and although it has some symptoms in common with other diseases, it has a few new ones that don’t fit at all. After dealing with this, and a few other outbreaks, she begins to wonder if there might not be a human hand involved in these epidemics...This novel will be the first thing you’ll want to pick up upon waking, and the last thing you will put down before nodding off. It is an adrenaline filed medical murder mystery that you won’t be able to get enough. It’s absorbing, delightful, serious, scary, but fun, too.I highly, highly recommend it.
