I started reading this book with an open mind, but it didn't take long before questions were raised.I appreciate introductions that explain the author's background and motivations for writing the book. For a subject like self-improvement, a good intro can help the reader understand how the basic principles were developed. My concern began at the very start, when the entire sum of information contained within was repeatedly referred to as "The Way," a vague marketing term designed to promote an air of authority or professionalism without actually divulging any useful information. But whatever; I continued reading, and the author sounded reasonably genuine and intelligent. I thought maybe there could be some moderately useful information here. Then I got to the first page of the first chapter.I find it incredibly annoying when I see random words capitalized as if they are trademarked material. It's bad enough that the introduction repeatedly refers to "The Way," but when random individual words are capitalized ("Elements," "Momentum," "Balance"), you can be assured that it's just ambiguous nonsense designed to grab your attention (and your money). Why are any of these words capitalized, if not to deceive the reader? I am going to use a few excerpts to illustrate why I stopped reading so quickly."Our minds can be a great tool for development when they are consciously focused. If there is a loss of awareness and little direction, our daily thoughts can easily become negative..."I certainly agree with this to a large degree. Humans tend to focus on the negative. We're just wired that way; being afraid of things that can kill us has allowed our species to survive. It's also true that many people tend to allow their negativity to run unchecked and interfere with various aspects of their lives. I know this not only because I've done it, but also because I see other people do it every day. But the sentence isn't even over before the wishy-washy stuff starts to break through:"...which causes us to be affected by our external condition."Now, I'm no happiness expert, but it seems to me that our "external condition" (again, an ambiguous phrase) is bound to affect us due to the basic nature of reality. If anything, it's our negativity that further affects our "external condition" and makes the situation even worse. Think of a person born into poor conditions who spends their life blaming their failures on their misfortune versus a person who uses their adversity for inspiration and determination. Either way, the external condition is drastically affecting their lives. Perhaps I'm simply misunderstanding what the author is trying to say, but the ambiguity is a bad sign of the quality of writing. It immediately gets worse:"This lowers our energy and stops us living life to its full potential."This is fast beginning to sound like that "Secret" crap of getting good things in life through doing nothing but wishing for them. The book goes on to talk about "the whole of you - your mind, body, and spirit" and Balance and "wisdom of your whole body." Clearly we've left the realm of science and psychology and dived head-first into the realm of magical thinking."Start by focusing on the energy within your solar plexus (the area between your belly button and your sternum). You can place a hand there to bring more focus. Start to sense the energy and potential within you.Quietly listen with your whole body to the power that is there. You can use the gentle rise and fall of your natural breath to keep your attention focused there for a few moments.Once you start to feel this potential and power within your body, expand your awareness outward, toward the center of your chest and the base of your spine."I stopped reading at this point. Okay, I get it, it's a concentration exercise. But it's also complete nonsense. If these specific words seem to make logical sense to you when placed in this order, then you should probably be reading a dictionary instead of this book.
