Description

A well-known scientist, who has recently discovered an effective vaccine for cocaine addiction, dies from anaphylaxis after a routine injection in the office of his allergist, Dr. Leonard Haberman. A malpractice lawsuit ensues, fanned by a politically ambitious senator. Questions arise when it is discovered that the cocaine vaccine specifications are missing along with the head technician who worked closely with the deceased scientist. CBI Agent Ben Locke connects these events with a cold case involving the mysterious death of another scientist and a nefarious plot implicating an organized mob is exposed, placing Haberman and his family at great risk.

I read a lot however, I avoid medical thrillers because I'm a doctor and frequently get irritated by the technical errors in the medicine and also because I am largely uninterested in a beautiful intern running around a hospital wondering why her patients are all dying. Somehow I stumbled in Anaphylaxis and picked it up, in part because of all the positive reviews (more than the five family member's obligatory 5 star reviews). I am really glad I did. First, the medicine was spot on. Kudos to Dr. Wanderer for his accuracy and realism. The medical scenes were told (and read) by someone who has lived them. Second, the plot is a real whodunnit with the answer in front of you but not really so you are guessing -- and surprised -- until the end. Without giving too much away, the plots and subplots fit together cleverly as a jigsaw puzzle with enough overlap that you thought you knew the answer until you then realized you had assumed incorrectly. There is no wasted information and no wasted scene. It all counts. That's why I enjoyed the plotting so much. It is a meaty book without meaningless diversions. The stakes are high and the tension palpable as you see the trajectory of each of the major players wind their way through the book. I am afraid I put off quite a few responsibilities while I had to finish it. Well worth the investment in time.Weel done, Dr. Wanderer. I'm looking forward to the next one.
