Description

[Read by Assaf Cohen] An explosive series debut that mirrors global headlines and will have listeners frantically clamoring for more. Raisa ''Rae'' Jordan, an agent for the United States Diplomatic Security Service, isn't in Israel for more than a day before her predecessor is gunned down in a Tel Aviv square by a sniper. Assigned to investigate the assassination of one of her own, she must also protect Judge Ben Taylor and his teenage daughter. They may be the sniper's next target and are most certainly being threatened by a desperate cadre of terrorists with their sights set on the secretary of state's upcoming visit. But is an attack on the secretary of state all that they have planned, or is that just the beginning? There are no protocols for this kind of a situation, and following the rules is exactly the kind of thing that could get the Taylors killed. To subvert an attack that could crush the fledgling peace in the Middle East, Jordan must trust her instincts and bring together a contentious team of agents from Israel, the United States, and the Palestinian territories to uncover a conspiracy years in the making.

I'm a big fan of international espionage novels, and this debut from Chris Goff is among the best. What I particularly liked was the inside look at Israel-Palestine politics, and how ordinary people make their ways through life there. I know a fair amount about the region, but I had no real idea how the underworld of cross-border commerce and communication worked. The scenes in which both sides (often violently) try to manipulate to control it are breath-taking. I also liked the weaving of Russian forces into the plot. The story is based heavily in the past -- in the KGB, in the father of the heroine (Raisa) and his relationship to Mossad, and whether some kind of peace can finally be brought to the region. Raisa -- Ray -- Jordan is the lead character, an agent for the U.S. Diplomatic Security Service, and has a black mark on her professional life that becomes a turning point for her later in the book. The ending is powerful, a wallop. To give you an idea, here's the last line in the book: "Sometimes it is better to let the dead sleep."
